WE'VE not seen him for more than 10 years, put former chart-topper Anthony Kavanagh is hoping to get back in the public eye by winning new TV search for a star show Grease Is The Word.

But Anthony - better known as 1990s pop star Kavana - might be in for a shock. For his former manager Nigel Martin-Smith reckons he hasn't got the moves to win.

Anthony used to be managed by Take That manager Nigel in the days when his singles were reaching the top of the charts.

But he disappeared after parting company with the pop guru and fled the UK to try to establish himself in America.

Now he is back living in Manchester and hoping to resurrect his career in the music business 10 years after his brief but hugely successful brush with fame.

And, to get there, he is auditioning for the role of Danny in the stage musical of hit movie Grease - live on ITV every weekend for the foreseeable future. Kavana may not be back, but Moston's Anthony Kavanagh is certainly hoping the prime-time exposure will give his career a new lease of life.

Former manager Nigel Martin-Smith has confidence that his former protégé will reach at least the final 10. He tells me: "I can confidently predict that Kav will get to the final 10 guys for the role of Danny. He is a great singer; there is no doubt about that.

"But I'm not so sure he has what it takes to win this competition because his dancing was always a weak point in his repertoire. And the role of Danny calls for someone who can dance and sing a bit, not the other way around.

"There are people in the show who can dance and even look like Danny from Grease so I think Kav may have his work cut out actually winning the competition." As pop star Kavana, Anthony had a string of hits in the 1990s - the biggest being a cover of I Can Make You Feel Good, which topped the charts in 1997.

But then he and Nigel parted company and he joined that other well-known pop guru Simon Fuller - the man who gave us the Spice Girls - and promptly disappeared.

A spokesman for Grease Is The Word tells me that Kav has moved back to the UK and has been trying to get his music career off the ground again. "He sees Grease is the word as part of that process," the spokesman says.

Now aged 28, it might not be his last hope but he hasn't many more stabs at the big time left.

"Good luck to him," Nigel says. "It's nice to see him having another go."

Ive just been watching this and im getting really annoyed with it!! Its such an unfair competition. To pair the couples, then change the pairings and then say they have to sing solo?? What about the strong people who have already been voted out because they were with a bad partner. They should have just sang solo from the start. I think they have made a mistake with this whole programme. Ive loved grease since i was a toddler and i have to say that i am disappointed with this whole thing!

Sorry for the rant, just needed to get it off my chest!!

I totally agree Jane!! They should have all sang solo from the start, and then if you voted for individuals you would be left at the end of the series with the best Danny and the best Sandy!! The whole voting thing wasn't very well thought out in my opinion and now they are frantically trying to rectify it but it's too late.

I think they should also sing more musical songs or at least sing with the little mics that they use in the theatre (the ones that are attached to the side of their faces) to leave them free to dance and act out the song - having some of them standing with normal mics makes it look like some weird version of X-factor and doesn't work!!

was sooooo excited when i saw Kav was on it i was a die hard fan back in the day and loved him just like i loved TT. ive been voting like crazy and im so glad they announced tonight that they are gonna go solo cos now he'll have a better chance (sorry but vicky is so unpopular and she has no charisma at all). They only escaped bottom 2 tonight because of kav fans no other reason!

Anthony and Micheal and Alison and Susan (but i actually LOVE michelle the best but dont think she'll get voted in)

I love Kavana too, ive been to see Grease is the word twice now but the second time had trouble getting in as was so un-organised!!! we were at the front of the kew but got let in last!!! They told us that they allocated seats for people but then when they got there they got told loads of production people have taken the seats so there was quite alot of people who didnt get in.

I managed to get tickets for the final but i rang them and they said there only got tickets for 2 rows for the public so i dread to think what it will be like on saturday so just warning you if you are going sat no matter how early you get there you mite not get in, they said its mostly friends and family.

That seems a bit unfair! I havent got tickets but surely its the public who are voting so the public should be allocated a lot more than that! I understand family and friends would want to go but there are a lot of people that would love to go too. I hope you get in!

I went to the final on saturday and it was amazing.... So much better live !!
Poor Anthony :wall: He was so much better on the night... and he's gorgeous...

I was right at the front of the top standing section...

Quite alot of people took their chances with seating and got seats.

There was definately around 100 people from the public who got in.
