View Full Version : Top of the pops
Top Of The Pops is to close, after a run of 42 years on TV. The show's final edition will air on Sunday 30th July.In a press statement released this afternoon, BBC Director Jana Bennett said: "We're very proud of a show which has survived 42 years in the UK and gone on to become a worldwide brand, but the time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion. Although we bid a fond farewell to Top of the Pops we remain as passionate as ever about reflecting the vitality of contemporary music across all our channels."
Roly Keating, Contoller, BBC TWO added: "I've really enjoyed the last year that Top of the Pops has transmitted on BBC TWO and the team did a stirling job in revitalising the format for our audience, but we all recognise that the time has come to move on."
However, "The end of the weekly show does not mark the total disappearance of the Top of the Pops brand from British television screens. It will continue to feature in programmes such as TOTP2, BBC TWO's archive show based on the Top of the Pops back-catalogue which will sometimes incorporate new performance, as well as one-off specials."

I think it's a terrible shame because we all have such fond memories of TOTP as we were growing up, but it has become rubbish in recent years..
I never liked TOTP once they moved it from Thursday night @ 7pm and started constantly changing the feel of the programme. It was like they were trying too hard to rescue something that hadn't needed fixing until they started messing it up!!

I know! I read that last night on bbc news too! Its such a shame as we've all grown up with TOTP. It was an institution almost.

Oh No.... thats such a shame they are taking TOTP of the air. I grew up watching that programme. Although I can't say ive have watched it recently. When it was moved from Thursday night at 7pm.... I just never had the time to watch the show. But I suppose the music has changed and the audience. It was silly putting it on Sunday, I suppose it was bound to happen. On the other hand I really like TOTP2 so in a way i'm glad they will still show it. Bring back the good old days, when television in the evenings was worth watching.........My god I'm sounding old. :D
it was never the same once it moved slots :(

I think they moved it from Thursdays in about 1999 I remember thinking it was a strange time slot. Then last year or the year before they moved it to Sunday. ::)
Christmas Day will never be the same again without Xmas TOTP :(

Hi Nat
I agree with you, it hasn't been any good the past few years. To be honest, there is no point to it anymore! When it was first introduced it was to bring us the news of the week's No 1 - I am one who is old enough to have seen the first show, and did!
I don't know if I will watch the final one, the format to me has been very lack lustre for a few years now!
Then again, when I look back and think about the earlier programmes . . . Pan's People, Legs & Co . . oh dear, oh dear! ;)
End of an era, such a shame it's gone out on a whimper! I may well tune in on that last show to see if it's a sort of look back show:)

I think from the arena tour programme Gary said he used to watch TOTP religiously every thursday night............my mum and dad did too.........
It doesn't mean anyhitng anymore......the music nowadays is so rubbish......anyone can get a number today...............i'm sad its going a bit but they either need to find a programme that captured the spirit TOTP did about 10 - 15 years ago or like they have done just scrap it all together....... :(
When is the last show? :-/
I think i read somewhere that its going to be next month. Its sad that its finishing but i think that it hasn't been that great for a while. With this going thats the end of my links to childhood tv. I feel for the little people who have to watch modern childrens programmes. Lets hope it goes out with a great last show, maybe even get take that back on for one last time.

Yeh. I think they should have all the classics back on for their final episode......... :)
I have never watched the show completely before (I only watched those clips of TT from youtube)
It is sad to hear that a 42 years old show has to be stopped
I heard there is a TTOP magazine in the UK. Will it be no more too?
I remember Take That performing 'Could It Be Magic' on Top Of The Pops!! I still know all the dance moves!! :medium-smiley-082:
